Through Saturday night…
A rather benign weather pattern is expected through the short term period as a surface ridge of high pressure builds into the region tonight. For this reason, there are no significant weather concerns through the short term period.
In spite of the relatively colder airmass overhead today, full sun is helping temperatures warm well into the 30s to around 40 degrees this afternoon. Clear skies will continue tonight and the winds will become light as the aforementioned surface ridge of high pressure builds into the area. This will support strong radiational cooling overnight, with temperatures likely to bottom out in upper teens to low 20s into early Saturday morning. Shallow ground fog development cannot be ruled out in this regime late tonight, but it appears the rather dry airmass shifting into the area will limit the threat for more significant fog development tonight.
West-southwesterly winds are expected over the area during the day Saturday as the center of the surface ridge of high pressure settles over central parts of IL and IN. A slightly better surface gradient across far northern IL should also support some gustiness (up to around 25 mph) during the day for areas generally to the north of I-80. A warmer airmass will accompany these southwest winds, and this will lead to a warmer afternoon on Saturday. Forecast guidance favors temperatures at 925 mb to warm to around +2C during the daylight hours of Saturday, which is about 4-5C warmer than todays values. With another day of full sun expected Saturday, it is expected to be a rather pleasant early to mid February day, as afternoon highs likely to reach into the middle 40s in most locations.
