Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Chicago/Romeoville, IL
1214 PM CDT Sun May 21 2023
.SHORT TERM… Issued at 330 AM CDT Sun May 21 2023
Through Monday…
Expansive surface high pressure will remain in control, bringing continued fair weather. Based off the RAP smoke forecast, the mid-upper level steering pattern should keep the Canadian wildfire smoke off to our north and east. Warming of the air mass will result in highs away from the lake cooling footprint in the upper 70s to around 80F today and probably 1-2F degrees warmer on Monday. Skies will be mostly clear today, with forecast soundings then indicating sufficient moisture between 800-700 mb on Monday for scattered high-based fair weather Cu at peak heating.
Light flow aloft and the sharp land-lake thermal gradient will support a steady inland march of the lake breeze in the afternoon. Monday`s southeasterly synoptic flow will enable an earlier inland push of the lake breeze and associated lake cooling, knocking temps back to the 60s. Good radiational cooling conditions tonight should support upper 40s-lower 50s lows outside of Chicago and mid-upper 50s in the city.
