Wednesday and Wednesday Evening …

No Weather Hazards expected …

The Great Lakes upper low that has remained locked in place for the past several days will finally migrate eastward off the Atlantic coast into tonight. Rising heights aloft and a warming airmass overhead in its wake will support moderating temperatures over the next couple of days, though daily lake breezes will keep things cooler near the lake.

DISCUSSION…

The western periphery of the cloud cover associated with the Great Lakes upper low continues to reside near the western shores of Lake Michigan early this morning. With primarily clear skies currently in place across much of my IL counties west of the immediate Chicago area, much of the area will experience a good deal of sunshine today. However, there is likely to be another increase in mid and higher level cloud cover late this afternoon as a weak impulse tracks southward across the area into early this evening. In spite of this, temperatures today will have no problem warming above yesterdays values, especially for inland sections of northern IL, where highs should top the 60 degree mark. Closer to the lake, however, onshore winds behind an inland progressing lake breeze will keep conditions several degrees cooler this afternoon.

.SHORT TERM… Issued at 307 AM CDT Wed May 3 2023

Through Thursday…

The Great Lakes upper low that has remained locked in place for the past several days will finally migrate eastward off the Atlantic coast into tonight. Rising heights aloft and a warming airmass overhead in its wake will support moderating temperatures over the next couple of days, though daily lake breezes will kee Pthings cooler near the lake.

Light surface winds under a surface high moving across the area into tonight, combined with clearing skies overnight, will support another chilly night tonight. Overnight temperatures are likely to bottom out into the mid to upper 30s in the typical cold spots, with lower 40s expected in the more urban areas. While this does not appear to be a night supportive of widespread frost development, we certainly cannot rule out some patchy early morning frost in the typical cold spots. Otherwise, expect temperatures to rebound quickly through the morning hours on Thursday.

Winds will turn south-southwesterly across most of the area on Thursday following the eastward departure of the weak surface high. As this occurs, the accompanying influx of warmer air from the southwest, in combination with mostly sunny skies, will support another significant jump in inland temperatures (into the lower 70s) on Thursday. Another lake breeze is likely again on Thursday, so temperatures will be several degrees cooler near the northeastern IL lakeshore during the afternoon.
