PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have
in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

There are several forecast concerns which include…
Freezing temperatures tonight. Strong winds through early this evening and again Friday. Elevated fire danger this afternoon and again Friday afternoon.
Scattered showers continue across far northern Illinois as an upper wave moves across the area. There have been a few mping reports of graupel with the strongest showers and this activity will continue to move east through late afternoon and should quickly end with sunset. Continued pops through the I-80 corridor but the bulk of the activity may remain further north.
Westerly winds increased rapidly over the past few hours with some gusts into the 40 mph range. Wind gusts into the 35-40 mph will be possible through sunset and then winds will rapidly diminish this evening. Dewpoints have also dropped into the mid/upper 20s at many locations allowing relative humidity to drop into the mid 20 percent range south of the showers. These conditions will maintain an elevated fire danger through early evening and generally south of I-80.
The lower dewpoints are expected to remain across the area tonight allowing temperatures to drop into the lower 30s outside of Chicago with upper 20s possible. There is some uncertainty for temps tonight due to possible mid level cloud cover and winds possible remaining in the 5-10 mph range. These may be limiting factors for frost formation, but a cool airmass with the lower dewpoints seems to favor temps near or below freezing and have issued a freezing warning for all areas, except central Cook County and Chicago.
Winds will increase again mid/late Friday morning with gusts into the 30-35 mph range expected and temperatures may end up a few degrees warmer, possibly reaching 60 across the southern cwa. Dewpoints likely will stay in the 20s through early afternoon and this should allow even lower relative humidity levels, possibly into the 15-20 percent range southeast of I-57 creating an elevated fire danger again for Friday afternoon.
A cold front will move across the area Friday evening, bringing an increase in cloud cover later Friday afternoon, slowly increasing dewpoints and a chance of showers across northwest IL in the late afternoon. The chance of showers will be short in duration as the front moves across the area Friday evening and should be east of the area by midnight. Low temps by Saturday morning are likely to be back in the lower 30s but no frost/freeze mention for now.
