Through Tuesday night…
An upper-level low continues to spiral above the Great Lakes which has lead to the development of showers across much of northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana. As the low begins to pull away this evening showers will gradually come to an end with most areas expected to be dry by midnight. Blustery northwest winds continue to be observed across the area this afternoon with gusts upwards of 35 to 45 mph especially near the I-39 corridor. While these gusts will ease some this evening, breezy conditions are expected to linger through the day on Tuesday though with lighter gusts on upwards of 30 mph.
Warmer conditions will begin to filter into the area on Tuesday as the low continues to push eastward, but temperatures will still be roughly 10 degrees below normal for early May with highs forecast to be in the low to mid-50s. There will also be a chance for a few showers Tuesday afternoon as a vorticity maxima dives across the region. Forecast soundings do show that profiles would be slightly drier than today which should help to limit the coverage of the showers with our far eastern Illinois counties and northwest Indiana having the greatest potential. Thankfully, showers are expected to taper quickly during the evening hours as drier air moves in and begins to clear out the clouds. However, the clearing skies will allow temperatures to cool into the lower to mid 30s with some locations across far northern Illinois possibly dipping below freezing Tuesday night. Though frost is not favored as winds are expected to remain elevated.
