Updates at Arlingtoncardinal.com/NWSChicago

Lake-induced instability across Lake Superior and Lake Michigan was producing more widespread shower coverage northeast and north of the forecast area, with mainly just some isolated to scattered sprinkles and light showers wrapping southeastward across southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, which will likely persist through late evening along/north of the I-90 corridor across northern Illinois. The precipitation is likely to fade with the passage of the stronger forcing (air rising) with the upper wave (usually rising air associated with cold advection at lower levels). Temperatures forecast to settle in the low-mid 30s by morning.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Chicago/Romeoville, IL
835 PM CDT Sun Oct 16 2022

.UPDATE…
Issued at 835 PM CDT Sun Oct 16 2022

Expanded mention of sprinkles a little to encompass an area generally along/northeast of a Rockford to Chicago/Michigan City line through this evening. Otherwise, going forecast is right on track and no other significant changes were made at this time.

Robust low level cold advection persists this evening, within blustery northwest flow in the wake of this early morning`s cold frontal passage. GOES water vapor imagery and 00Z upper air analysis depicts a fairly strong mid-level short wave trough digging southeast across WI/northern IL, while low levels continue to slowly cool/moisten within the cloud bearing layer in stee Plow-level lapse rate regime across the region. Deeper saturation (as noted in GRB 00Z RAOB) and lake-induced instability across Lakes Superior and Michigan was producing more widespread shower coverage northeast and north of the forecast area, with mainly just some isolated to scattered sprinkles and light showers wrapping southeastward across southern WI/northern IL. These will likely persist through late evening along/north of the I-90 corridor across northern IL, before fading with the passage of the stronger forcing with the upper wave. Other than expanding sprinkle coverage over far northeast IL as mentioned above, remainder of overnight forecast appears to be on track with temps eventually settling into the low-mid 30s by morning.

Going forecast continues to look good into Monday, with active weather expected as outlined in previous short-term discussion.
