Tuesday and Tuesday Evening …

No Weather Hazards expected …

A cold air mass by March standards is spread across the region to start this “pi day” (3/14). The 850 mb temperatures of -12C as observed on Monday evening’s regional soundings are in the bottom tenth percentile for mid March and that`s reflected in temperatures around ten degrees below normal to start Tuesday.

DISCUSSION…

This evening`s setup of 1029 mb high pressure over the area under a clear sky will foster quick radiational cooling. Lows of 15F to 20F are expected for most north of I-80 locations out of the metro.

Lows in the low 20s Tuesday/Wednesday near Arlington Heights.

.SHORT TERM… Issued at 211 AM CDT Tue Mar 14 2023

Through Wednesday…

A cold air mass by March standards is spread across the region to start this “pi day” (3/14). The 850 mb temperatures of -12C as observed on last evening`s regional soundings are in the bottom tenth percentile for mid March and that`s reflected in temperatures around ten degrees below normal to start today. The closed upper low responsible for dragging this modified continental polar air mass southward is departing the region, taking its stratocumulus with it. The exception will be lake effect clouds in northwest Indiana with spotty flurries possible this morning. These clouds will depart in the afternoon hours.

This evening`s setup of 1029 mb high pressure over the area under a clear sky will foster quick radiational cooling. Lows of 15F to 20F are expected for most north of I-80 locations out of the metro.

Return flow gradually envelops the area Wednesday. While high clouds may thicken in the afternoon, there should be a fair amount of sun at least in the morning. The residual snow cover in the far northern CWA should melt on Wednesday, but will likely be enough to keep those northern locations sub 50F. Near 50F is expected elsewhere.
