Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Chicago/Romeoville, IL
1220 AM CDT Wed May 3 2023
.SHORT TERM… Issued at 205 PM CDT Tue May 2 2023
Through Wednesday night…
Gusty west-northwest winds persist across northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana this afternoon, as cloud cover increases from the north. Surface observations show gusts to 30-35 mph south and west of the Chicago metro area, with dew points mixing down into the mid-20s or so as forecast. Expect dew points to come back up a bit this evening. Expect a zone of light showers to develop late this afternoon through early this evening from western portions of the Chicago area into northwest Indiana along a weak zone of low level frontogenesis. These showers should be relatively short- lived, largely dissipating by around 9-10 pm. Expect fairly rapid clearing late this evening for most of the region, but with clouds persisting from near the lakeshore into northwest Indiana.
Temperatures from near to just above the freezing mark are forecast for Wednesday morning, with the coldest temperatures in the Rockford area. At this time, only patchy frost is anticipated, given at least some wind persisting through the overnight hours combined with dew points from the upper 20s to around 30 F. We won`t issue any frost or freeze headlines with this package, but those with any particularly sensitive vegetation in outlying areas west and north of Chicago may want to consider protecting it from tonight into Wednesday morning.
Dry conditions are forecast for Wednesday, with light winds and high temperatures warming into the low-mid 60s except near Lake Michigan. Light winds will continue into Wednesday night, with low temperatures in the upper 30s to around 40 degrees.
